My life is dictated by time. It's fourth week Monday and I'm devoted to schoolwork to the extent that I am not going out to do things. I also sprained my hip/hamstring/left leg, which prohibits me from being able to walk anywhere other than where I absolutely need to go. It also prevents me from running, which blows because I just got to be able to run 10 miles/16 km in under 85 minutes. It's simpler to stay at home and watch movies, listen to podcasts (I love This American Life), read books like Carson's Silent Spring and poetry like Thoreau's and daydream.
It's been a challenge to transfer my relaxed attitude towards life in Australia to America. However, I've always been able to take a step back when I start to go into overdrive. I'm doing very well with only being concerned about things I can control. I'm proud of myself for this.
Thursday 4/19
I'm also proud that I've been able to balance my club leadership and participation with my job. But balancing isn't enough. I'm looking forward to the campus events that are coming up, and the cessation of my job. Western is getting out of school and with my injury, I won't be able to get to another store--so I won't be working for the latter half of the term. I love my job and I need the money, but I'll be able to devote more time and energy to courses and clubs.
I close with a few gathered quotations and ponderings:
Sometimes when you want to be in a place, you’ll do anything. --Mike Birbiglia
If you mix the mashed potatoes and the sauce, you can't separate them later; it's forever. The smoke comes out a the cigarette, but it never goes back in; it cannot go back. That's why it's hard to choose. You have to make the right choice. As long as you don't choose, everything remains possible. --from 'Mr. Nobody'
when someone closes the door I open the skylight --me
Why doesn't the pain make you say, "I won't do it again"? --Ira Glass
It’s not the broken dreams that break us—it’s the ones we didn’t dare to dream. --Starlee Kine
If things were easy to find they wouldn’t be worth finding. --unknown
